Yes, a Walt Whitman reader I am ... while I was being schooled in "Singing the great achievements of the present", I was being seduced by "The far-darting beams of the spirit!—the unloos’d dreams" of the East, to wit, India. This blighted my education and distracted my dreams ... a bigger intellect might have reconciled the opposing imperatives, but not me ... I was caught in a nutcracker, between West and East. Whitman has been a blessing and a curse for me. The poem itself, as Aria astutely observed, was only a platform. |
